History

Morgan Kaufmann was founded in 1984 by Michael Morgan and William Kaufmann with the support of an investor group from the academic, publishing and venture finance communities. It operated as an independent company until its acquisition by Harcourt in 1998. It operated as an imprint of Academic Press until it was acquired by Elsevier in 2001.

When it was founded, Morgan Kaufmann was strategically located in San Francisco to capitalize on proximity to Silicon Valley, the world’s largest population center for computer technologists. Although several of its employees work remotely from the Bay Area and elsewhere in the world, the majority of the current MK team is based in Burlington, MA, just outside of Boston.
