CHI 2010: We Were – and Are – HCI
April 19, 2010
| CHI 2010 is behind us now, and I was excited to represent the team at Morgan Kaufmann this year. This is a key conference for us every year, because it gives us the opportunity to meet the newcomers as well as the mainstays in the HCI community, and hear what YOU are talking about in the world of HCI! It was the first time I had attended CHI, and it was really great to be able to meet the authors who make our books so great, as well as the users of our content. I got some wonderful feedback from customers on our books, as well as some great tips and suggestions of things to do to bring the MK brand further into the community. At CHI 2010, we launched one of our spring titles, “No Code Required: Giving Users Tools to Transform the Web.” This book was edited by Allen Cypher (who sat on a CHI 2010 subcommitte), Mira Dontcheva (who was one of the personas featured throughout the conference!), Tessa Lau and Jeffrey Nichols. “No Code Required” covers the latest research, development, and systems emerging from HCI research labs on end-user programming tools.
I got to meet several other MK authors at CHI, including Jeff Johnson, Ginny Redish, Caroline Jarrett, Tharon Howard, Ben Shneiderman, Derek Hansen, Carol Barnum, Dennis Wixon, Daniel Wigdor and more. The exhibit hall was fascinating- among other things the latest in robotics were on display with two robots in particular showing us the future of robotics and the amazing uses for this technology. The student showcase was very interesting as well- I especially enjoyed reading the poster on “Zombies and the Art of Making People Walk.” It’s great to work in an area where such serious research and technology can be fun! As the theme of the conference stated, “We are HCI.” I know speak for the whole team at Morgan Kaufmann when I say we appreciate you letting us be a part of the UX/HCI community, and we look forward to delivering the best content to you in the future, so you can continue to “be” HCI! See you next year in Vancouver, -Melissa, Marketing Manager |
